Fast Frederick Facts

Dr. Ulysses Bourne, Sr. co-founded the first hospital for blacks at 173 West All Saints Street in Frederick in 1919. He also was a founder of the Maryland Negro Medical Association and served as its first president.

 

 


MUSEUM & TANEY HOUSE

“I started many years ago and I enjoy learning the little snippets of history and about the artifacts. I also enjoy learning from the other docents and from the staff and experts.”

Museum Docent: Provides informative and interactive tours for all visitors to the historical society's museums. Some Taney House docents also may be trained in open-hearth cooking and other living history demonstrations. For more information on the Docent Program, click here. Shifts: Tues..-Sat. from 10:00 a.m.- 1:00, 1:00-4:00 p.m., Sun. 1:00-4:00 p.m. Taney House shifts only are available on weekends.

Museum Greeter: Welcomes all visitors to the society's museums and assists in visitor services. Greeters staff the front door while promoting Historical Society programs and providing information about the organization. Shifts: Tues..-Sat. 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., 1:00-4:00 p.m., Sun. 1:00-4:00 p.m. Taney House shifts only are available on weekends.

In-Class Interpreters: Takes our in-class programs on the road. In-Class interpreters lead programs for students in grades PK-12. Interpreters choose which programs and grade level they prefer to work with and are trained by professional educators. Shifts: Wed.-Fri., times vary.

Curatorial & Research Assistant: Do you like antiques and textiles? Work with the curator to catalog and preserve artifacts. Also, assist in research and exhibit set-up. Positions available at both museums. Shifts: MFCH, Mon.-Fri. 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Taney House, flexible hours.

Program Volunteers: Assist in the set-up and implementation of special events and society programs; such as family programs, the Lecture Series, the Treasured Heirloom Event, and Museums by Candlelight. Program volunteers work on select evenings and weekends throughout the year.

Garden Assistant: Do you enjoy gardening? The Historical Society needs knowledgeable gardeners for some light gardening work in the Heritage Garden and at the Roger Brooke Taney House. Seasonal.

Marshall Etchison Bookstore: Assist visitors and ring up sales at the Historical Society’s Marshall Etchison Bookstore. Shifts available: Mon.-Sat. 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
