The Historical Society of Frederick County is located in this building at 24 E. Church Street in Frederick. Built around 1820, the building served as the Loats Female Orphan Asylum from the 1880's to the 1950's. This image was taken around 1900.

The Historical Society Library holds a variety of unique materials awaiting discovery. Letters, diaries, Civil War records, maps, genealogies, and books on local subjects all are available for use by historians and genealogists. Knowledgeable staff are available to assist patrons.

The poem, "This Cannot Be--O Thou of Little Faith!," penned by Frederick County native Francis Scott Key, is on of many unique manuscripts in the Historical Society's library.

Conveniently located within walking distance of downtown Frederick, The Roger Brooke Taney house interprets the property owned by the former Frederick attorney and fifth Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. The restored house, owned and operated by the Historical Society of Frederick County, has presented the legacy and times of Roger Brooke Taney for over seventy-five years.

The Historical Society of Frederick County offers a variety of dynamic and engaging public programs that explore and celebrate the rich history of our county. The annual Lecture Series includes seven evening programs held from March through June and September through November. Unique educational programs such as Preservation Workshops and Genealogy Classes promote the study and preservation of family history. Working with the other members of the Frederick Historic Sites Consortium, the Society presents unique programs during Museums By Candlelight, held the second Saturday of December and Museum Discovery Weekend, held the first weekend in April. Special events and offerings, such as bus trips, the Ice Cream Social and the Garden Party provide opportunities for fun and fellowship. Through its publications programs, the Historical Society makes available a variety of resources on Frederick County History. In addition to the quarterly newsletter and semi-annual journal, the Society has published local histories, diaries, cookbooks and other items of local interest. Volunteers are currently being sought for a variety of roles and activities. Museum docents greet
visitors and conduct tours. Library volunteers answer reference questions and organize the
collections. Other volunteers help with social events and special offerings. For more information
