BRIEF HISTORY OF FREDERICK COUNTY

PLANNED GIVING

A gift to the Historical Society of Frederick County is a gift to the community—one which will help to assure the county’s rich heritage is preserved for generations to come. While we always recommend that you consult legal counsel or your financial advisor before making any major financial decision, we do offer the following options for your consideration:

Bequests

Through a bequest you can make a gift of assets to the Historical Society of Frederick County through your will. A provision in your will that names the Society as a beneficiary of all or a portion of your estate will assure that you will leave a meaningful legacy in support of our mission. If you already have a will, you may consider adding a bequest through a codicil, which is a change to an existing will.

Charitable Gift Annuities &

Charitable Trusts

Through a charitable gift annuity or charitable trust you retain an interest in the gift, with the remainder to be received by the Historical Society at a later time. There may be specific tax benefits to you and your estate in utilizing one of the planned giving tools in support of the Society.

Life Insurance

In the event that your life insurance policy no longer has the financial significance for your family’s financial security that it once did, you may wish to consider donating the policy to the Historical Society of Frederick County. You can do that in one of two ways. First you can make the Society the owner of the policy. This may have considerable tax benefits to you today. You also may name the Society as the beneficiary of the policy. While this option may not offer any immediate tax benefits to you, your estate may benefit upon your death.

Appreciated Stocks

The rising stock market can result in an appreciation of the value of stocks, which may create a significant capital gains exposure, should you choose to liquidate the stock. Through a gift of appreciated stock to the Historical Society of Frederick County, you can enjoy dual financial benefits, while also making a meaningful contribution in support of the Society. By doing so you may be able deduct the full market value of the stock, while avoiding any tax on the capital gain. In order to take advantage of the dual benefits, however, you must not sell the stock yourself; it must first be donated to the Historical Society. The transaction can be completed electronically from your broker to a brokerage account we have established for that purpose.

Real Estate

Your personal residence, a vacation home, commercial property or undeveloped land can be donated to the Historical Society of Frederick County. As with donations of appreciated stock, you may be able to receive a deduction for the full market value of the real estate, while also avoiding any exposure for the capital gains that have occurred through the appreciation in value of the property.

Cash

Cash donations are the simplest way to support the Historical Society of Frederick County. A cash donation can be made by cash, check or credit card. The impact of you cash donation may also be enhanced through your employer’s matched giving program. Please inquire if your employer offers such a benefit and take advantage of it to maximize your support to the Historical Society of Frederick County.

The Historical Society of Frederick County is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, donations to which are deductible to the full extent of the law. The Society’s current financial statement is available upon request. Information submitted to State of Maryland under the Charitable Solicitations Act is available from the Office of the Secretary of State for the cost of copying and postage.
