Fast Frederick Facts

Camp DavidCamp David, the Presidential Retreat, is located in the Catoctin Mountains of Frederick County, near Thurmont. Camp David became the official Presidential Retreat in 1942, when President Franklin Roosevelt approved the site which he named Shangri-La. Among the important historical events that have occurred here were the 1979 meetings that resulted in the Camp David Accords.

Walking Tours of Downtown Historic Frederick

Exhibition: In & Out of Frederick County: 300 Years of Travel and Tourism
Monday-Saturday, 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. & Sunday, 1:00-4:00 p.m.
Museum of Frederick County History
Travel diaries, maps, postcards, photographs, and clothing worn for travel are some of the artifacts and objects that will accompany the words of people who visited the county and those countians who ventured abroad. The exhibition runs from July 1 through summer 2010. Regular museum admission.

Exhibition: "Chief Justice Roger B. Taney and the Dred Scott Case"
Saturdays, 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. & Sundays, 1:00-4:00 p.m. (April 10, 2010-Dec. 11, 2010)
Roger B. Taney House
The exhibit tells the story of Dred Scott, a slave who for five years lived and served his master in a free state and territory. Scott later sued for his freedom. After failure to make his case in Missouri state courts, the case was placed before a U.S. Supreme Court led by Chief Justice Taney in 1857. The subsequent decision became a landmark in our nation's history and fanned the flames leading to the Civil War. Regular museum admission.

Learning Lunch: Scrapbooks
Thursday, February 4, 12:00-1:00 p.m.
Frederick County Archives & Research Center

Bring a lunch and take part in this series of informal sessions led by the Research Center's professional staff. This session will explore the history of scrapbooks and issues that arise from combined elements, construction, and wear and tear. Examples and recommendations for care will be provided. Family Workshop: Victorian Valentines
Saturday, February 13, 10:00 a.m.-12:00 noon
Museum of Frederick County History

Kids age 6-10 will enjoy creating a Victorian Valentine with a parent or other adult. Led by Donna Winkler, the workshop will provide the opportunity for participants to create a fancy, lacy "scrap" valentine or a "puzzle purse" valentine. P. Newman Lecture: Brian Balogh
A Government Out of Sight: the Mystery of National Authority in Nineteenth Century America, or, Americans Like Government: They Just Don't Like to See It

Using a historical context based on his new book, UVA Professor of History and author Brian Balogh will provide a talk addressing some contemporary implications of this style of governance. Copies of A Government Out of Sight will be available for purchase. Free and open to the public.

Preservation Workshop: Researching Your Historic Property
Saturday, March 13, 10:00 a.m.-12:00 noon
Museum of Frederick County History

County Historic Preservation Planner Janet Davis will lead this exploration of researching a historic property. The presentation will focus on land records and locally available materials. The workshop will include a demonstration of online tools and discussion of resources available at the Frederick County Archives & Research Center. $10 fee covers the cost of participation.

Museum of Frederick County History & Roger B. Taney House

At the Museum of Frederick County History, visitors will discover local people and events from the last 260 years, look through a 1860s stereoscope, and experience life as an orphan in the late 19th century. At the Taney House, a new temporary exhibit examining Chief Justice Taney and the Dred Scott case will be open. Walking tours focusing on local African American history and communities will depart from the Taney House. Free and open to the public.

Lecture: Cows, Plows, and So Much More! The History of Extension
Tuesday, April 13, 7:00 p.m.
C. Burr Artz Public Library

Christine Lothen-Kline, Area Extension Director for the University of Maryland Extension, will discuss how and why extension developed in the U.S., including a brief history of extension in Frederick County. Extension service today and in the future also will be explored. Free and open to the public.

Genealogy Symposium: Researching Your Irish Ancestors

Treasured Heirloom Event
Saturday, April 24, 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
New Location! The Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center

The 12th annual Treasured Heirloom Event finds the event moving to the spring! The region's biggest and best antiques and collectibles evaluation event features experts in a variety of fields who will examine your family keepsakes and yard sale finds. Sponsorship opportunities are available and tickets go on sale in April. Check out the Treasured Heirloom web page for more information about the experts, sponsorships, tickets, program advertising, photos from last year’s event, and more. Tickets are $10 for the examination of the first item and $5 for additional items.

Presidents at Charlottesville Bus Trip
Friday, May 14, 7:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m.

The Historical Society is sponsoring a trip to Charlottesville to visit the homes of presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe. Our first stop will be Ash Lawn-Highland, where we will be provided tours and have lunch. Then, we will travel to Monticello for tours and to see the newly contructed museum, education center, and expanded gift shop. More information and registration forms will be available in late February. Mark your calendar and plan to join us!
