Fast Frederick Facts

RepudiationOn November 23, 1765, one of the first official acts against the British Government took place in Frederick County. In an act of defiance against the unpopular Stamp Act, members of the Frederick County Court issued a writ on unstamped, untaxed paper. Their act of defiance was greeted by angry residents who hung the stamp collector in effigy and buried a copy of the despised act.

SCOUT GROUPS

The Historical society offers an array of educational programs for Scout groups. Reservations are required for groups of 10 or more.

Tours of the Historical Society Museum
At the Historical Society Museum docents tell visitors of the diverse history of Frederick County, including information on Frederick County’s founding, its industry, and historical figures that lived here. Tours that focus on specific aspects of the county’s history such as the Civil War, daily life in the 1800s, women’s roles in the 1800s, and other topics are also available.

Tours of the Roger Brooke Taney House Museum
Docents at The Roger B. Taney House interpret the life of Taney and various aspects of life in early nineteenth century Frederick County. The site includes the house, detached kitchen, root cellar, smokehouse, and slaves’ quarters.

Walking Tours of Downtown Frederick
Guided walking tours of downtown Frederick reveal the vast history of the city. Tour guides discuss the founding of the city and Frederick’s role in the history of our nation.

Outreach Programs
Outreach programs allow Historical Society staff members to bring Frederick County history to your meeting site. Staff can present information on a variety of topics and conclude the lesson with a hands-on project.

Opportunities to Earn Eagle or Gold Scout Award
There are many volunteer options at the Society. We are happy to work with leaders to develop opportunities that lead scouts towards their Eagle or Gold awards.

Listening to the Past Brownie Badge Opportunity
Did you know that the woman credited for creating “The American Look” in fashion was born and raised here in Frederick?  You will learn about her and the many other women who made a difference here when you decide to earn your “Listening to the Past” badge.  Along with learning about women in the past, you will also get the chance to meet and speak to people who have lived in Frederick for many years and their memorable moments here!

The Historical Society of Frederick County can help your Brownies attain their “Listening to the Past Badge.” Download this booklet [PDF, 178K] for activity ideas and contact information for field trips or outreach opportunities.
