Are you looking for a way to earn a badge? An activity to help Scout Advancement? An interesting troop field trip? The Historical Society of Frederick County offers an array of fun, hands-on history programs for boy and girl scouts of all ages. For more youth programs that troops may be interested in, click here.

SCOUT OPEN HOUSES
Bring your Cub Scouts, Brownies, or Junior Girl Scouts to our new Scout open houses, where they can easily complete requirements, Try-Its, or Badges while discovering Frederick County history. Spring Scout open houses will focus on Scouts’ personal and community histories, and fall sessions will highlight Barbara Fritchie and other legendary Frederick County citizens. Registration is required by the Wednesday before the open house. $3 per Scout, parents and leaders are free. Brownie Girl Scout “Listening to the Past” Open House
Saturday, March 17, 1:00-4:00 p.m.
Museum of Frederick County History
Brownie Girl Scouts explore Frederick County history while completing the “Listening to the Past” Try-It through the experiences of children in the past (“Tell Stories of the Past” & “Community Stories”), playing and making historic games (“Games of the Past”), and taking a self-guided walking tour (“If These Buildings Could Talk”). Museum activities will take about one hour, plus 30 minutes for self-guided walking tour.
Junior Girl Scout “Local Lore” Open House
Saturday, April 28, 1:00-4:00 p.m.
Museum of Frederick County History
Junior Girl Scouts discover the history of Frederick County while completing the “Local Lore Badge” through life in the past (“Take a Trip”), county legend Barbara Fritchie (“Word of Mouth”), creating a poster or newspaper page about the past (“Extra, Extra, Read All About It!”), a self-guided walking tour (“It’s All In the Maps,” “Tour Your Community,” “Focus on the Future”), and playing and making a historic game (“Toys Through History” from “Toymaker” Badge). Museum activities will take about one hour, plus 30 minutes for self-guided walking tour.
Cub Scout “Your History” Open House
Saturday, May 12, 1:00-4:00 p.m.
Museum of Frederick County History
Cub Scouts connect their personal and family histories with Frederick County history while completing or working on activities and electives through family life in the past (Tiger 1G, Wolf 4f, Bear 8e), the Native American experience in Frederick County (Wolf Elective 10a, Bear Electives 24a and 24c), playing historic games (Tiger Elective 35, Wolf 10b, Bear Elective 24b), making a family mobile (Tiger Elective 5, Bear 8d and Elective 9a), and taking a self-guided walking tour (Tiger 2F). Cubs are welcome to all open house activities. Museum activities will take about one hour, plus 30 minutes for self-guided walking tour. Registration is required by the Wednesday before the open house. $3 per Scout, parents and leaders are free.
BOY SCOUTS
Museum GO SEE IT!: Bring your cubbies to the Museum of Frederick County History or Roger Brooke Taney House to fullfill your museum GO SEE IT!. Scouts also will complete elective activities like "sewing a button" or "discovering Native Americans." Cub Scout program length: 60 min.
Citizen Activity Badge: Bring your troop on a walking tour of Frederick and explore the value of citizenship in our community. Explore the history of the American flag and complete a flag ceremony at the Roger B. Taney House. Webelos program length: 60 min. walking tour, 60 min. museum program.
Heritage Merit Badge: The Frederick County Archives and Research Center is available to help scouts research local history and use primary sources. Come and get a behind-the-scenes look at how our organization preserves local history.
GIRL SCOUTS
Listening to the Past Try It!: After we take you on a downtown walking tour of Frederick's historic district, scouts will stop by one of teh Historical Society's museums (Museum of Frederick County History or Roger B. Taney House) to complete this badge. Brownies program length:2-3 hrs.
Wave the Flag Try It!: Stop by the Roger B. Taney House to learn about local resident, Francis Scott Key. Brownies will also get to fly a flag on a flagpole and go on a walking tour of Frederick. Brownies program length: 60 min. walking tour, 60 min. museum program
Folk Arts Badge: Stop by either of the Historical Society's museums to complete the folk arts badge. Look at portraits and photographs from our archives, learn a traditional art, and explore what old toys can teach about life long-ago. Juniors program length: 90 min.
Local Lore Badge: Join us for a walking tour of Frederick's historic district to learn what life was once like in our busy city. Finish your tour with a visit to one of our museums to learn even more. Groups that work on the Local Lore badge also will receive an historic map activity (from our archives) to complete at your next troop meeting. Juniors program length: 90 min. field trip, 30 min. meeting activity.
EAGLE & GOLD SCOUT AWARDS
