Fast Frederick Facts

RepudiationOn November 23, 1765, one of the first official acts against the British Government took place in Frederick County. In an act of defiance against the unpopular Stamp Act, members of the Frederick County Court issued a writ on unstamped, untaxed paper. Their act of defiance was greeted by angry residents who hung the stamp collector in effigy and buried a copy of the despised act.

The Docent Program is the Historical Society's most extensive adult learning opportunity. Docents have access to exclusive lectures, workshops, and other programs led by Historical Society staff. The docent program also is a great way for history lovers to make friends and share their passion for learning with the public.

WHAT IS A DOCENT?

The word docent comes from the Latin word docere meaning "to teach." Modern docents are museum teachers who educate visitors by conducting tours of the museum. The Historical Society of Frederick County provides guided tours for all interested visitors at both of its museums. The role of the docent is paramount to carry out the Historical Society’s mission and to provide an educational resource to the public.

NEW DOCENT TRAINING

The next New Docent Training Course will start in March 2010!
Our comprehensive new-docent training course is a rewarding experience for anyone interested in local history, art, or antiques. All new docents are required to fully complete the entire docent training course, which is offered twice a year. The class meets once a week for six weeks and includes coursework in local history, teaching theory, museum practice, methods of interpretation, and touring techniques. Docents-in-training also will get an in-depth behind-the-scenes tour of the Historical Society's collections. To download the New Docent Course syllabus, please click here [PDF, 118K].
